OUR FISHING BLOG

campout

Some good fishing, great weather and camp fire combined to make 3 fun days on the Mohaka. Pictured are Grubby with a nice rainbow,Lisa hooked into a nice fish which I dropped just before the photo,(i am still reminded of that from time to time),dinner on the barby and Grub hooked into another rainbow. The river was low and clear and the fishing was pretty tough, late in the season in a easy accessed spot but we still managed some good fish. I even got a solid brown on a large terrestrial which came up of the bottom of a deep run. I don't know who was more surprised, me or the fish ! Lisa fished really well considering how little she has done and managed to hook into a few fish, Grubby seemed to be untangling stuff more than fishing but managed to put some good drifts in and hook into a couple of fish. Getting late in the season to go camping, waking up to a frost around the tent is not my idea of fun but the hot pools soon made up for that. The early winter spawning fish are making an appearance in the local tribs, some nice fat fish so signs are good this early in the season for some decent runs. All we need now is some rain !

Good right-up and insanely jealous that you guys are getting to fish that spot on the Mohaka - we did it at Easter last year. Lisa, sounds like you're starting to show Brett how it's done, nice work! We're enjoying the trip over here but fishing has been non-existant (brown ponds and rivers is all we've seen), into 'Nam today so we can't wait to get to the coast! take care guys.

Well, I have to say I really enjoyed the fishing more than ever on this trip. I usually fish the odd pool when I go with Brett, then just laze on the river banks, read, play with Briggs and enjoy watching Brett do his stuff. Getting some consistant good casts and drifts myself and everything coming together was a real buzz - it was like it all clicked. And I caught a few fish to boot! The campsite itself and setting just capped it all off. The hot pools and bbqs and remote location are imprinted in my 'do it again' list!
