OUR FISHING BLOG

river and lake
Drew with a small fresh run rainbow Me with a solid rainbow destined for the smoker

The fishing has been patchy, the weather has been crazy with hot humid conditions and torretial downpours, the cicadas don't know what to do,one minute it is hot and they are going flat out then the rain comes and they go dormant. The rivers are high one day and down the next, the lake fishes really well one day and then hard the next. It really is a mixed up season. I have reports that the Mohaka had its worst flood in 30 years and the river is still high and dirty with dead fish on the banks. Lets hope it is not as bad as it seems and this world class river recovers quickly. On the positive side there are some very good fish being caught on the lake and bodes well for the Taupos\fishery. Rinbows in the 9lb size are being caught with the odd one over the magic 10lb. These fish are few and far between but there is a chance of hooking in to one of these and that is all you can ask of a fishery. Some big browns are starting to move into the lower Tongariro and if you are into night fishing try the Waitahanui river mouth. Some nice fish being caught there.

Britt, Great trip! Courtney and I had a great day with you. I think we did pretty good despite the adverse conditions. Give that crazy dog Briggs a big pet from us. Would love to re-connect in the future. Best of luck and Tight Lines....drew
