Lucky Phil and son Darcy with a nice rainbow from the lake destined for the smoker along with a couple more. This was the finish of our 2 days fishing. The first day was spent fishing the upper Wanganui accessed by quad bike . The day was perfect, no wind and sunny, the river was low and clear and the big rainbows could easily be seen cruising the deep pools and feeding in the runs with some just below the surface and taking drys with no abandon. This was going to be a good days fishing. All I had to do was to teach Phil the art of fly casting and all the skills necessary to hook and land a big rainbow . Easy, yeah, right !! First bit of rough water and I through a large terrestial dry in and watched as a large head materialised and devoured the fly. "God save the trout " and I lifted the rod tip and came up solid on a large rainbow. the 6wgt rod bent in half with the fish heading domn stream at a rate of knots,I handed the rod to Phil who had just rehearsed playing the fish a minute beforehand. He did a superb job playing the fish and we had the rainbow in the net after a torid fight. Now onto the casting, getting Phil to lay a dry fly out nicely to a feeding rainbow !! The first few fish were pretty safe, quickly retreating to the depths leaving Phil to ponder the art of fly casting. As Phils casting improved so did his chances and it wasn't long before we hooked a solid rainbow we saw feeding in the tail of a pool.A big Jack fish and Phils first ever rainbow on fly . 2 more big rainbows came to the net and a very large fish which Phil had no controlover what so ever broke of f on a stick, leaped in the air giving us a dirty look ! Unfortunately Phil took a dip and (must have been getting hot ) drowned his camera so no photo's.
