Jeff, and Zane Heli fish on the Waiau for a day in the wilderness fly fishing and spinning for rainbow and brown trout. The river looked good , clear water with no one in sight except for the odd dear. The flight took about 15 minutes or so, we looked for other anglers, saw none and dropped into the gorge with the trees seemingly touching the blades- and landing softly on the stoney river bank. Jeff had never been in a Helicopter and had a grin from ear to ear. What a way to start the day. We loaded the rods, dry fly and Zane put the spinning rod to work in the first pool 10 yards from where we landed. A nice rainbow pulled the tip down and ripped some line of the reel, jumped a couple of times and was gone. Not a bad way to start the day. Next run Jeff put the dry fly in the tail and a small fiesty rainbow lept on the fly , a small tussel and neatly realeased. A couple more followed and Zane was given some speedy casting tuition. A few casts later Zane had his first trout on fly. Jeff missed a big fish a couple of pools later, hooked into a nice brown which took him down river only to loose the fish, Zane hooked into some good size rainbows on the spinning rod, Jeff landing hard fighting rainbows on the dry fly. The next day we fished the lake on Maverick with Briggs providing the entertainment on board. He is not big on the release side of fishing !! A great couple of days, thanks Jeff and Zane.
