Ira with a solid rainbow taken on a dry fly on our recent quad bike trip into the Wanganui.
Our 3 day guide trip started on the Mohaka , sunny skies and little wind with the river low and clear. The fishing was tough, the usual multitude of small fish were absent to be replaced by a few very large browns and rainbows. These fish were in the slow deep pools and weren't rising, tough to catch in these situations. We watched a large brown rise to our nymph only to refuse the offering at the last second. The rainbows weren't interested at all. Ira suggested I give the wet fly a go, green wooly bugger, sinking line and bang, fish on and a cracking rainbow leaping all over the pool.Ira managed to hook a couple of fish but a tough day. Day 2 saw us on the quad bike, an adventure in itself. Our first pool we found a fish rising. It took 3 casts before the fish took the parachute adams but what a take. The fish slamed the fly and it was all on. Small stream and big fish ! The second pool saw a even bigger fish slam the dry. Click the you tube link for the take. The fish eventually took us deep aroung a rock and we had to break it of. We saw it swim away so it was ok. I need to catch that one again. We had another large fish take the dry but Ira got a bit keen and stuck a bit to soon and pulled the fly out of its mouth. Day 3 saw us on the Waipunga with some great action with hard fighting rainbows. Well done Ira.
