Macca with his rainbow destined for the smoker and Xmas lunch.
Macca, Neil and Doug from Napier charted Maverick for a few hours for some trout fishing on Lake Taupo on Tuesday afternoon. The lake was flat up till lunch time then the dreaded westerly picked up with quite a few white caps around. This always makes slow trolling difficult as the wind blows the boat around, takes you away from the dessired course and the right speed is hard to maintain. All in all hard work. You can always stay in the shelterd places but that is not where the fish are all the time. We tried the shelterd bays with no luck so we headed out to Horomatangi reef where I have been doing really well. We tried harling first and was still putting out the second line when Neil hooked into a nice fish only to loose it at the boat. This gave us good encouragement, the fish must be here ! It was 1/2 an hour till our next bite, only to loose that one as well. In came the harling gear , over to the drop off and out with the downriggers. We got right into a fish, a bit skinny so back it goes, down goes the lines and 'bang' hooked up again, this time a good fight on the light gear and Macca has his Xmas lunch. Down with the gear again and Neil gets his Xmas lunch as well. Doug managed a fish as well but not good enough for the dinner table ! The good ones kept getting off the hook. Thats fishing ! Lures of choice were the 'traffick light ' and 'spottie gold'
